Steve Pugh has been a strong artist on Animal Man and has successfully taken over from Travel Foreman, who had the scariest and eeriest artwork of the reboot. The 0 issues all have a character erupting from a washed out cover. This is my favourite of the week because it generally carries the motion well and I love the symmetry and colouring.
Animal Man is the best New 52 series (along with Blue Beetle).
What makes Animal Man so special is the way Lemire deconstructs the superhero mythology. For example:
1) Superheroes tend to monopolize the attention of the reader, while Animal Man is constantly upstaged by the supporting characters of the series.
2) Superhero comics usually don’t give much importance to the private life of their main character (they tend to focus only on the “costume on” part); in Animal Man, on the contrary, the private life of Buddy is the main theme of the series. In fact, it is rather infrequent to see Buddy with his costume on.
3) Buddy is not perfect, and is not perceived as perfect by other people: in fact, in the 11th issue, when he tells his wife “It’s going to be okay”, she replies “Don’t give me anything of that superhero crap, Buddy.” That cut and thrust perfectly enlightens the philosophy of the series.
Thank you for your comment. I agree with most of your comments. It is difficult to see Buddy as powerful as he once was because they have made it clear that he isnt. He was not a pure breed avatar and has been given a reduction in powers. Now I love this as it really creates a hero who struggles with his identity and him putting his family at risk. I do worry that once this story is over he will have his own single adventures and it may harm him as a viable hero. That will be key to the future of this book, but I do have faith in Jeff Lemire.
Me too. Thank you for your reply! : )
